In addition, the RADIOSHACK NISSAN TREK team also won the team classification.

“Today was amazing,” said an excited Gallopin, age 23. “The team protected me and my place in the general classification. This is a fantastic team and I never imagined that I would be in a position to have these riders working for me.”
Tony was third on the general classification, joining winner Peter Velits (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) and Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) on the podium. Nibali had battled for a sprint bonus along the course and race radio had initially announced that he’d taken the lead, but a jury review sorted out the error and the top three places remained in place.

“We’ve been racing down here for two weeks now,” said team director Dirk Demol. “We didn’t really have the race in Qatar that we were hoping for. But it was the first competition and the stages were short with a lot of intensity. Then this week we came to Oman feeling much stronger with Andy and Jakob. Our ambition was to win the overall with Jakob but his crash was worse than we originally accessed. So Tony stepped in and won Best Young Rider plus we won the Team GC. I say congrats to the boys,” Demol concluded.
The final sprint was won by Marcel Kittel of Project 1t4i. He took his second stage win in this year’s tour, outsprinting Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Tyler Farrar of Garimin. It was a fast final circuit that had mass sprint written on it from the outset. Kittel struck out for the line early, forcing others to react to his bold move and the German handily took the victory.

For RADIOSHACK NISSAN TREK the Tour of Oman provided a solid week of racing, culminating in the team victory for the general classification. “This was truly an experience to race here,” said Andy Schleck. “I was amazed how organized and well-run everything was. This is not a country known for cycling but the roads were secure and there were nice stages. Six days behind us now and I’m looking forward to the upcoming races. I came here with no racing in my leg, only training miles. Every day I felt better and that’s a good sign. My next race will be Paris-Nice (March 4-11) and then Critérium International (March 24-25). I hope to be ready to show myself for those races.”

Why did First Endurance come out with PreRace capsules? It’s a great question and one that we’ve been getting a lot of lately. And well, it ultimately came down to listening to our athletes and customers. We created PreRace capsules for a couple of reasons:

1. The biggest reason is that we got quite a bit of feedback from customers and sponsored athletes who wanted us to offer PreRace in capsules. They told us that, while they love the formula, they felt like the powder delivery system limited their ability to use the product in some situations. Capsules are a lot more convenient, easier to take, easier to carry and don’t require any planning or preparation (mixing beforehand, etc…), like using the powder does.

2. We also got feedback that some people were struggling with the taste of the powder. Having a capsule option is a easy solution for this.

3. The final reason is that we also received feedback that some people weren’t taking a full scoop of the powder because they felt it was too intense and too powerful. The capsule option gives these people flexibility in their personal dosage preferences.

We tested the capsule prototypes with sponsored athletes and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. After the sponsored athletes had the prototypes of the capsules, it was just a matter of time before other people found out we had a capsule prototype and asked us to make it available to them too. Because of the number of people that contacted us about the capsules, we decided to make it available.

We still have a ton of athletes that want to use the powder so we plan on offering PreRace in a powder and also in a capsule form. The powder is great for certain circumstances and the capsule is great for other situations. It all comes down to personal preference.

If you’re familiar with Multi V, you’re probably aware of the fact that it’s the first multinutrient vitamin that’s clinically proven to enhance endurance.

But what does that really mean? How can MultiV be so effective that it actually increases time to exhaustion by 43%?

Check out the video below where our VP of Science and Technology, Robert Kunz, explains the science behind MultiV.

As the video presentation demonstrates, our products are based on scientific research and clinical studies. We then combine that research with many rounds of feedback from our pro athletes and customers.

Some of our favorite reviews are:

“When I first started taking Multi-V, I noticed a huge improvement in the decrease of illness and fatigue.” - Sarah Haskins (Gold Medalist 2011 Pan American Games)

“I’ve been using MultiV for two years now. I really notice the benefits and feel much healthier, especially in the winter.” - Mary Beth Ellis (Ironman Champion)

Quite often when coaching athletes through their development it can be like putting a puzzle together, one of those ones where you have a thousand pieces and 700 hundred of them are the sky with the rest in water. For a while it looks like nothing, then little by little it starts getting clearer as you put more of the pieces together you figure out what you are seeing.

I liked what I saw in Tauranga with many of these puzzles becoming clearer after the accumulation of a lot of work by the athletes competing.

Go2max had 20 athletes on the start line for this year’s National Long Course Champs. Every year in the past we have produced national Champions and 2012 was no different with some impressive performances from both the men and women.

Although all the athletes I have racing deserve mention for various reasons from just what it takes to get to a start line, I want to mention just a few outstanding performances for the day.

Josh Harrison in the 25-29 age group after coming out of the water in 150th place rode and ran through the field to finish 1st in his age group winning by over 6 minutes and in the process finished 7th overall for the day including elites.

Hilary Wicks after winning the NZ Ironman in the 30-34 age group and placing 3rd overall in age group in World Champs in Hawaii, cleaned up her age group by over 14 minutes and finished 4th overall including elites. Hilary improved her time from last year by 10 minutes.

Debbie White who played for the NZ silver Ferns decided to try her hand at Triathlon to see if she could qualify for the World ITU age group Champs which was held in Auckland this past November. Well she did better than that finishing 2nd overall in the 30-34 age group. In the weekend she finished 4th overall in the 30-34 age group in only her 4th Triathlon and 1st Half Ironman.

As can happen we also had some disappointments with Justin who won his age group here last year in the 20-24 had to retire with wheel issues after being at the pointy end of the race for much of the bike. Also Larisa Marsh who finished 6th in her age group at Hawaii Ironman in 2011 had a superb swim, but had to retire after her 2nd puncture of the day on the bike. I know just as much as they both wanted success, to learn to accept disappointment is a valuable tool in sport to be equipped with and both I know will turn this back into success at the first opportunity.

Womens results

Hilary Wicks 1st 35-39 age group (4th overall)

Debbie White 4th 30-34 age group

Angie Wall 11th 30-34 age group

Anna Dempsey 20th 25-29 age group

Donna Swart 12th 25-29 age group

Larisa Marsh (DNF) 2 punctures

Mens results

Josh Harrison 1st 25-29 age group (7th overall)

Mark Stringer 12th 25-29 age group

Stephen Morriss 17th 25-29 age group

David Thompson15th 30-34 age group

Chris Johnston 26th 30-34 age group

Jess Peebles 40th 30-34 age group

Hayden Goldsack 21st 35-39 age group

Richard Knight 63rd 35-39 age group

Vaughn Woods 13th 40-44 age group

Paul Dufty 19th 40-44 age group

Steve Murray 55th 40-44 age group

Ian Marshall 33rd 45-49 age group

First Endurance is pleased to announce they will be working with the Radioshack Nissan Trek superteam in 2012. Since First Endurance products are designed to complement each other, the riders will receive the entire First Endurance product line and work closely with First Endurance on new product development.

“Input and feedback from the riders and staff at Radioshack Nissan Trek will help First Endurance continue to push the limits of performance safely by offering the best endurance nutrition available” says Mike Fogarty, VP of Sales & Marketing at First Endurance.

The RADIOSHACK NISSAN TREK roster for 2012 has been finalized and counts with 30 of the world’s top professional cyclists, hailing from 14 different nations. The team will be led by 6 team directors under the management and direction of General Manager Johan Bruyneel.

LEOPARD s.a. President Flavio Becca is confident that the team will be very competitive in 2012, prolonging the string of good results in 2011. “In our inaugural season we had many podium places in the classics and Tour de France. Oliver Zaugg completed the season with a spectacular Tour of Lombardy victory and we secured third place in the UCI World Tour ranking. But like any owner, whether it is in business or sports, I am constantly looking for ways to improve the team. Johan Bruyneel is a leader who has a proven record of unparalleled success. He maximizes talent, employs winning strategies and motivates riders and staff to achieve greatness. I am confident that Johan is the best person for our team.”

Bruyneel has had a busy few months assembling the 2012 roster. “I’ve never been one to shy away from challenges so when I was presented with this opportunity, I immediately saw the potential of the idea. We collectively decided it was a win-win partnership for all parties. After that, we became focused on putting together 30 riders, which was a tougher task than I’ve ever experienced in the past. Combining Team RadioShack riders that we made an agreement with for 2012, with existing LEOPARD TREK riders resulted in 42 riders, 12 over the maximum limit for World Tour teams. We worked hard to ensure that every rider’s contract was honored and that each one had a place to ride in 2012; if not with RADIOSHACK NISSAN TREK, then with another professional cycling team. With the roster of 30 riders finalized, we can now spend all our time and effort in preparing this group for the challenges that lie ahead.”

Sarah Haskins has been dominating the Olympic Distance races over the last couple years by consistently winning the biggest races against biggest competition. In 2011 alone Sarah won seven races including South Beach, St. Anthony’s, Monterrey ITU, Austin, LifeTime Fitness Minneapolis and Chicago, US Open, The Toyota Cup title and Pan American Games Gold. Wow! This takes a lot of focus and hard work. Often this means pushing your body to a limit beyond what it is used to and allowing it to recover so it can re-build and get faster. Sarah, who has been with First Endurance for three years attributes much of her success to her nutrition protocol which keeps her immune strong, her recovery quick and her fueling nailed. Sarah Haskins outlines her use of EFS, Ultragen, MultiV and OptygenHP.

The very first thing I do every morning as part of my routine; drinking a glass of water with my FE Mulit-V and Optygen HP products. I like to do this firstthing so that for one I don’t forget to take my supplements, but also so that I’m taking them before my key training sessions of the day. I then think about how many water bottles I need to fill up depending on the length and intensity of my upcoming workouts. I fill my bottles with EFS lemon lime or grape (my favorite flavors), but will also use fruit punch (Nate’s favorite) if necessary and I am out of my top two flavors. Some people in the past have complained to me about the strong taste or flavor of many electrolytes drinks. The mild flavor (especially in the grape) is one of my favorite aspect’s of the EFS drink. Not to mention, the additional electrolytes compared to other brands to help me stay hydrated. If my workout is easy or I’m just about to head to the airport, I will often fill my bottles with half strength or quarter strength EFS since I will not need a full serving of electrolytes or calories to keep my hydration levels up.

When I head out for longer workouts (duration 2.5 hours or longer), I know I need to be prepared nutritionally…or else my training will suffer. Especially mid-season, when the heat and humidity are at it’s peak, keeping hydrated can be just as tough as the workout. Many Sunday mornings this year, Nate and I spent time filling up eight or nine water bottles with a mix of EFS, plain water, Ultragen, and a couple gel flasks. We pile everything into the cooler and are set nutritionally for the next four to five hours. There is nothing that tastes much better than a cold Ultragen after a hard 3-4 hour workout! It is amazing how much faster my body will recover with the proper nutrition during and post workout.

This is not to say that pro’s know everything…as I am still learning year to year. Earlier this year, I was feeling dizzy and fatigued on my transition runs after a moderately intense 2.5-3 hour ride. My transition runs were only 30-45 minutes, but I just struggled to get through the run. We experimented with taking more gel during the bike, instead of just before the transition run. I would take a swing of gel every 20 minutes of the bike in addition to the two bottles of EFS. After this change, I felt so much better on my runs and the “dizzy” feeling was gone. Don’t be afraid to change up your routine and see what works best for you!

Now that’s it’s my off season, I have cut dramatically back on my training/racing nutrition products. EFS, gels, OptygenHP, and Ultragen will not be needed until 2012. However, I be sure to stay on top my vitamins to help ward off those winter colds and flues. Even when I travel to see friends and family, I make sure I have packed my Mulit-V or whatever FE product will be needed for that trip! First Endurance is a key component to my success in racing and training. Athletes often forget about the importance of nutrition and how much of an influence good or bad it can have on your performance.

Enjoy the “off-season” and best wishes in your preparations for the 2012 year. I’m stocked, loaded and ready to go for 2012!

Optygen HP review in Mountain Flyer magazine

First Endurance Optygen HP $128 (120 capsules)

Derived from the plant Rhodiola and the fungus Cordyceps CS-4—two adaptogens that have reportedly helped Sherpas climb Mount Everest—Optygen HP is said to increase oxygen utilization, increase the body’s ability to adapt to physical stress and increase aerobic threshold while reducing lactic acid buildup. Optygen HP also contains beta- alanine, another adaptogen shown to increase strength and exercise capacity. These are big claims for a little red pill, but there is a good amount of independent clinical research behind the formula, and First Endurance’s athletes are killin’ it all over the world stage.

Though it is hard to quantify whether Optygen HP was responsible for my improvements, I can say that I felt fantastic during rides and recovered well from hard training days during the two-month period I was using Optygen HP. My race results were pleasantly consistent during the period, enough so that I ordered another bottle before running out.

First Endurance recommends taking four capsules daily during hard training blocks. At $128 for a one-month supply, it’s definitely for those wanting to pull out all the stops when it comes to fitness. Of course, if you already have a coach on retainer, Optygen HP is certainly worth a go. –J. Carr

As a race day advantage, the benefits of using PreRace are obvious. What you may not know, however, is that using PreRace in training is when you’ll gain the most significant advantages.

Basic physiology principals are used in everyday training. Research shows that systematically pushing your body past its normal limit, recovering and then doing it again forces your body to adapt to this new pace or output. Your body adapts by repairing torn muscle tissue, increasing mitochondria, increasing vascularization and various other physiological adaptations. You become faster and can handle longer workouts. This is the basis of ALL Training. PreRace allows you to push yourself significantly past your normal limits.

How PreRace works:

PreRace ‘stimulates’ several systems in your body which allow you to push harder than normal. Caffeine is the main driver of the formula and most understand the benefits and experience of using caffeine prior to exercise. While caffeine alone is great when used appropriately, the PreRace formula delivers other key ingredients that work together to increase mental stamina, time to exhaustion and maximum workload.

PreRace also contains Quercetin, a plant derived flavanol that has been shown to enhance the effects of caffeine. Quercetin has also been shown to increased energy via mitochondria stimulation and is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties. In addition PreRace contains L-Taurine, to increase cardiac output by improving stroke volume in the heart. Essentially the heart is able to pump more blood through more powerful contractions. Citrulline Malate is also included because its a powerful nitric oxide booster. Stimulating nitric oxide causes your blood vessels to vaso-dilate, so they are larger. Large blood vessels allows for more blood to be pumped through your body, which effectively delivers more oxygen to your muscles. Lastly, we have added a neuro-stimulant blend consisting of catechins, DMAE and Theobromine that helps you remain focused.

1) Stimulant via Caffeine, Quercetin. Benefit: More drive for your workouts.

2) Improved Cardiac Output via L-Taurine Benefit: Stronger heart contractions means more blood driven through your blood vessels.

3) Vaso-Dilation via Citrulline Malate, a Nitric Oxide stimulant Benefit: More blood can circulate.

4) Neuro Stimulant via DMAE, Theobromine, Catachin. Benefit: Focus, positive mental energy.

PreRace Clinical Study

South Dakota State University conducted an independent study on PreRace to determine its effectiveness on cycling endurance. The double-blind placebo controlled study used seven trained cyclists and had them go to exhaustion in a 40K Time Trial. Each cyclist performed two 40K TT’s to exhaustion. On the first TT the cyclist consumed either a placebo or PreRace mixed with one serving of EFS 30 minutes prior to doing a 40K TT. One week later each cyclist would switch the protocol and receive the opposite of what he/she received the previous week.

RESULTS:

-The PreRace trial was 3′ 20″ faster in a 40k TT than without

-The PreRace group increased their watts by 15

-The PreRace group had an increase in work output

-There was no significant change in heart rate

-There was no significant increase in RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)

As you can see from the results of this study, PreRace did exactly as it was formulated to do. What is most impressive is that performance and watts increased significantly yet there was no change to heart rate or rate of perceived exertion.

HOW TO BEST USE PRERACE

Now that you understand how PreRace works, you can learn how to use this to your advantage. As a race day advantage PreRace is obvious, its in training where the benefit can become more permanent and/or more adaptive. Basic physiology principals are used in everyday training that goes something like this. Systematically push your body past its normal limit so your body adapts to this new pace or output. Recover. Do it again. In time your body will adapt to this new pace or output by repairing torn muscle tissue, increasing mitochondria, increasing vascularization and various other physiological adaptations. You become faster and can handle longer workouts. This is the basis of ALL Training.

Use PreRace systematically all year long in key workouts that require you to push past your normal limits. Once a week, incorporate a workout that requires a pace or distance that is beyond your comfort zone and use PreRace to help you push past that. Make sure you give yourself enough time to recover from the workout. This is critical. If you aren’t fully recovered from this workout, you won’t realize the benefits of this strategy, so be vigilant in your recovery.

RaceDay Recommendation:

Races of three hours or less consume PreRace 15-30 minutes prior to your race.

For races greater than three hours athletes must decide how best to dose PreRace. Some athletes can handle stimulants over many hours, some cannot. For those athlete who are more sensitive to stimulants consider using PreRace for the final couple hours of the race where it matters most.

PreRace Powder vs PreRace Prototype capsules

This is more a matter of preference than anything else. For some, adding PreRace powder to any drink they like is very convenient. Many like to put a scoop right into the EFS Liquid Shot flask or their EFS drink. For others, capsules are more convenient, easier to take, easier to carry and take the flavor obstacle out of the equation. PreRace powder will get absorbed faster and because it is a 5.5g scoop there is simply more active ingredients per serving than the 3 capsules. For long distance racing some athletes may prefer taking a three capsules periodically throughout the event. The powder is great for certain circumstances and the capsule is great for other situations. In the end it comes down to personal preference.

With no wiggle room in road closure time to replace the swim with an opening run, ITU officials opted to begin the event with a staggered time trial-style start with cyclists leaving every few seconds.

Famed for his cycling prowess, Rapp’s 3:09:21 split was just the 4th best bike but he then accounted for his 2:42 margin of victory over runner-up Joe Gambles with a race-best 1:49:32 split on the demanding, hilly 30 kilometer run — 2:57 better than Gambles’ effort.

Rapp’s total time was 5:00:15.

The victory comes 19 months after Rapp suffered near-fatal injuries when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while on a training ride in late March of 2010. Rapp made a spectacular return to competition a year ago with a 4th place finish at Ironman Arizona. Rapp continued his comeback this year with a win at the ultra-distance Leadman Epic, 3rd place at Rev 3 Portland, 2nd place at Calgary 70.3 and race-best bike and run while winning Ironman Canada.

Sylvain Sudrie of France, the defending ITU long distance World Champion, rode 3:09:13, virtually matching Rapp (3:09:21) and Gambles (3:09:17) on the bike and was just 3 seconds quicker than Gambles’ 1:52:29 run.

But Sudries’ 1:45 transition was 33 seconds slower than Gambles’, and thus provided the Australian with his 26 seconds advantage over Sudries’ third place time.

Denmark’s Martin Jensen, who had two previous 3rd place finishes at the ITU Long Distance Worlds, broke into a 5-minute, 40 seconds lead after a race-best 3:03:33 bike split. But after that sizzling effort, Rapp passed him about 10 miles into the 18.6-mile run as Jensen faded with a 2:00:16 run that brought him home in 4th place, 5:08 behind Rapp, 2:16 behind Gambles, and precisely 2 minutes behind Sudrie.

The USA’s Nicholas Thompson, a weaker swimmer who benefited by the swim cancellation, overcame a 16-minute deficit on the bike with a second-best 1:50:58 run to finish 5th, 6:15 arrears of Jensen.

Notably, Michael Raelert, who dominated the Ironman 70.3 world for two straight years before a hip injury sidelined him for much of 2011, fell to 6th place with a 1:57:47 run that was 8 minutes 15 seconds slower than Rapp’s.
